NOT worth the price!

This product has some good points - and one really big bad point. The first bonus is being able to even find 40 grit paper. Go ahead, try it. Things may have changed since I bought this but at the time I considered finding this product to be a lucky find. The abrasive on this sandpaper (40 grit) is excellent, and has good 'cut' (sharp edges to the abrasive particulates).I am using this to sand 100 year old plaster - LIME plaster not the joke gypsum stuff most people think of. In a sense you could say I am using it to sand stone, because that is what true lime plaster turns into - limestone. In some spots the floating of the original plaster job was done so well the finish is like smooth glass, yet this product is able to cut into it with a little pressure.Unfortunately the 'loop' backing (the fuzzy felt stuff that the 'hook' velcro attaches to) is just inadequate. I mean it is BARELY there.Within about a 15 minute period of using this product the backing deteriorates so badly that the disc flies off the sander. And when this happens - is the grit still good? Yeah, it's still decent enough to sand with - if you want to do it by hand! But if that was what I was looking for why would I buy this?!?Why only 2 stars then? Why not more? Because this is NOT 'cheap'. I paid $15 for a pack of 25. Do the math that's $0.60/ea.Compare that to the 'cheapo' brands out there that are $20/100 ($0.20/ea) and you would expect this thing to at least do the job of 3 of those. But I had some of the cheapo stuff lying around and... you know it - it did NOT.Is the grit decent? Yes, I believe it is. Does it sand well? While it is able to stay attached to your sander yes it does. Is the quality enough to justify the additional cost? ABSOLUTELY NOT. This product is 3x more costly than others yet fails to perform in a manner that one should expect for that premium price.Stay away from this stuff. Buy the 'el cheapo' stuff instead. Sure you'll go through more discs, but in the end your 'hooks' on your sander will be less clogged (bc their crappy 'loop' fabric breaks down and sticks to it). Do the math and you will find yourself shaking your head (like I did) when you realize that the crappy sandpaper you tried to replace with this 'premium' product actually saves you more money and effort. If you are reading this 'Dura-Gold' - for the price you charge you should be giving us better 'loop' fabric. SHAME ON YOU.

Just as good as pads 2X the price

First off, no issues with the hook & loop staying put. I used the same 4 pads on and off the sander for an entire large project and they stuck on great and I never threw a pad. I read a few reviews complaining about it and it makes me wonder how dirty and deteriorated their sander is. I have these on a cheap Black and Decker 8 hole orbital and they work extremely well. I have some really good Gator brand 80 grit pads and compared to these, I cannot tell the difference. Both cut quickly and leave a nice first stage prepped surface. Not much else to say they hold up and are cheap.

Best Value I've Found So Far

I have tried a number of disc brands (such as Black & Decker, 3M, and Diablo) and have found there are always trade-offs. Discs are either unreasonably expensive, or have one or more problems such as: poor quality abrasive that crumbles off the paper, cheap loop-backing that disintegrates and clogs up the hook surface on my sander, flimsy paper that rips off as soon as you snag on a splinter, or they simply don't last very long.I ordered a box of 50 for both the 80 grit and 120 grit Dura-Gold discs, and although they certainly aren't the highest quality available, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better value. The abrasive is well adhered to the paper (I've yet to have a single grain of it remain on a work-piece), the hook-and-loop connection is solid, the paper is strong and resistant to tearing, and they last a reasonably long time. ~32¢ per disc is a better price than anything I've ever bought at a hardware store, and they provide the sort of performance and durability that you would expect from much pricier disks.

Just about unbeatable

I was recently sanding some rough fiberglass off a canoe I was patching. (Dewalt random orbit 5" single speed) I had started with 3M 80 grit, and very quickly completely clogged up my last 3 discs. I'd completely run out and the only other paper I had on hand was the 150 grit Dura-Gold, figured I had little to loose so went for it and one sheet outlasted the 3 sheets of 80 grit 3M. I was blown away. Not only that using a crepe rubber piece I had most of the Dura-Gold came clean for a bit more life, whereas the 3M would not come clean at all. I'm now in the process of switching all of my sandpaper over to Dura-Gold. My only negative comment at all is that I do question the actual grit count. The 150 did seem a bit courser then what I'm used to, but that may very well just be that it is a sharper material. I'm no expert by any means, just kind of an odd job and hobby level tinkerer. I know I'm sold on it, even if I potentially need to use finer girts then I would have previously - still works better and lasts longer!

Fabulous Sandpaper. So impressed.

Wow! I purchased the 220, as I was out of the gator grip I usually purchase locally, because I kept forgetting to grab while I was out. So, I just Amazoned it. To be honest, I found the 220 a bit aggressive for what I usually use it on, so thought I would wear it down a bit on some rougher wood I usually use 120-180 on first. The wood was like a baby’s bottom after one pass. I was in utter shock. Magic sandpaper. I was so impressed, I actually sanded every piece I had in the garage. Now, from reviews it looks like the backing won’t last long. Honestly, I’m okay with that and the price per disc if it makes my life this much easier.

Compare to 3M Gold-Really

About Dura-Gold - Premium - 400 Grit - 5" Gold Sanding Discs - 8-Hole Dustless Hook and Loop for DA Sander - Box of 50I have been using the same 400 grit disc now for about two days. I haven't noticed any degradation of the abrasive coating while sanding down hardened UV resin to a "smooth as glass surface finish" using a Milwaukee random orbital sander. I also used the disc for hand sanding. The disc has not loaded up like other types of abrasives. I am using these to prep sand a consistent base matte finish, just prior to mirror finish sanding the coating thru 12 steps from 1500 to 12000 grit. All good. Yippee! Mirror-mirror on the workbench, make it shiny, my thirst to quench. Next...
