Adaptec RAID 8805 Components 2277500-R

This is replacing my old LSI 9260 which served me well but didn’t work on my new server build. This was as simple as a RAID setup can get. Would buy again.

Performs adequately in terms of speed and I had no issues getting it up and running, mostly. My main beef with this product is that it lacks progress feedback for several key functions. For example, a logical drive rebuild. All it will say is that it is rebuilding, but does not provide a progress bar or percentage completed indicator, a feature I have seen on many other controllers. It's not a deal breaker, exactly, but highly annoying since freezes are known to happen during these processes, and without a progress indicator it can be difficult to tell between a hung process or just a slow one.

This is a good RAID card if you know exactly what you're getting and don't need any more than what it's capable of. The support for 4k native drives, 8 connected devices, UEFI boot support, etc. is great, and this card is significantly faster than older generation Adaptec cards if your storage devices can use that extra speed.Two things to be careful about. One, even if your motherboard has a slot that can take this card, putting graphics cards, sound cards, USB expansion cards, or other PCI Express devices into your system could accidentally prevent this card from receiving all 8 PCI-e lanes that it requires for full speed operation. The card will still work on 4 or even 1 lane, but you will actually get rather poor performance from SSDs in this configuration.Second, this card DOES NOT support the coveted maxCache 3.0, which is the most important feature for those wanting to construct a hybrid SSD/HDD box, where your SSDs are a read/write cache for your HDDs (thus giving you HDD capacity, with SSD-like performance on most workloads). This is a significant weakness of this card and puts its overall appeal a notch below cards like the 81605ZQ.Other than that? Good stuff from Adaptec / PMC-Sierra.

Apparently EVGA's X99 motherboards are not compatible with the 7XXX series, but works just fine with the 8XXX series.Same great performance that I had with the 7805, but is compatible with EVGA's X99 Classified.

The Adaptec 8805 is an enterprise level RAID controller (you should have knowledge of RAID array configuration). It allows any RAID array configuration you could want. Features such as hot spare assignment, auto hot spare configuration, and auto rebuild configuration are nice. It can be configured to email notifications about array status. The GUI configuration interface is easy to use. This installation was for a RAID 10 array. Make sure you have adequate air moving through your computer case, as this card needs plenty of air to operate within temperature spec.
